Art flourishes where students are encouraged to think for themselves, solve problems themselves and discover things for themselves. Only information derived from their own experience can be considered valid. This is why the emphasis in the study of art at IST is on why rather than how - why a thing is done rather than the technique of doing it; the idea rather than the mode of expressing it. This is a statement of intent for the work of the Art Department and provides departure points for the syllabus structure it supports. Art is an integral part of everyday life. It involves intellectual processes, affects the way one sees and thinks, and develops in students the ability to notice, question, judge and select the world they are part of. Neither is art only there for the few and the gifted. The school that does not embrace and encourage creativity in all its forms, or at best minimises its importance, will never give all its students the advantages it should. Therefore, art has an important part to play in the development of all students at IST.
